Fusion News
The Fusion ended the spring season on a high note! Our hard work and perseverance resulted in a 4-3 victory at Corvallis High against the VFC Vipers. This was a back-and-forth game, full of physical play and moments of high emotion that provided plenty of entertainment for the spectators. The winning goal was scored in the last five minutes - just five minutes after the Vipers had pulled even (nicely done Brennan Wiggle). In the end, this Fusion win was the result of a gratifying TEAM effort.
There is much to praise the Fusion for in this game. We spent the previous week's practices focusing on our First Touch, Team Possesion and Finishing. In this game, the players were challenged to put these skills to the test and they "delivered."
Of Note:
- 1. 75% of our first touches were trapped within "half a step" of us. Awesome.
- 2. We maintained ball possession 60% of the game!
- 3. We outshot the competition.
- 4. We contested nearly every head ball and every 50/50 ball!
- 5. We played physically AND technically the whole match.
- 6. Some key players willingly played in their non-preferred positions in order to help the team succeed.
- 7. Some key players increased their intensity AND changed their style of play in the second half in order to quell 3 unanswered goals by the Vipers.
The coaches took special note of the team's desire and willingness to compete hard till the final whistle.
In addition: our two smallest players "played big" and scored 3 of our 4 goals (Evan Cooney, Ian Boozer); our goalkeeper (Jonny Morales) made two phenomenal one-on-one saves; our team captains (Sam Engle, Raul Fletes) worked tirelessly to dictate the pace of our attack and to pressure hard on defense; our wing defenders pressed hard and at times, initiated the attack on the flanks (Nic Wilson, Michael Martinez, Scott Svetal); our center defenders communicated well and were relentless in frustrating the Vipers' twin strikers (Ian Craig, JT Brooks); our wing mids served several dangerous through balls/crosses (Brennan, Josh Hahn, Colin Marshall) resulting in two of our goals.
We started the game with 13 and finished with no substitutes as Colin Marshall and JT Brooks left the game with injuries. Ice well, stretch, and enjoy a week off before we begin preparing for the Starfire Tournament.
WELL DONE FUSION.
Coach D.P.
