  • Name: Evon Smith
  • Assignment: EMFC Club President

I am happy to be the first board president of the Eugene Metro Fútbol Club. I have lived here in Eugene most of my life and feel deeply connected to this community. I have two children, Sam, who is a freshman at Whitman College, and Madeline, who is a sixth grade student at Roosevelt Middle School and a defender on the EMFC Spirit. I earned degrees at the University of Oregon and did graduate work at the University of Washington before working as a university instructor, academic advisor, and technical editor. I now manage my family's business, Smith Family Bookstore, and I am very committed to small and sustainable business development.

I have played soccer most of my life, coached and managed boy's teams, and have always been a fan of all levels of the game. Right now, my favorite soccer teams (besides the EMFC teams) are the Brazilian national team and the Smith Family Bookstore men's indoor team. My partner Jürgen Ruckaberle, coach of the EMFC Fire, and I love to bike long, hilly roads and explore cities together. If I'm not watching a soccer game, working, traveling, biking, or hanging with my children, then I'm usually reading a book.

  • Steve Cooney

  • EMFC Club President

I have been on the Board since the Club's formation in 2005/2006. I am a former business owner of a relocation company that served as an agent for North American Van Lines. Currently, I am an attorney at Cooney & Trudeau, PC, where I assist individuals and business entities with their legal needs.

My wife Kate and I have three children in the Club: a son on the '93 Fusion, a daughter on the '93 Spirit, and a younger daughter who participates in the Club's TOPsoccer program. Over the last few years our family has logged many miles, created many memorable experiences, and established many friendships because of soccer.

I am a strong believer that our children's participation in organized sports promotes their healthy development and that the lessons learned on playing fields are transferable to educational settings and the everyday world. I am glad that Eugene Metro exists for our children and pleased to do what I can to ensure its continued success.

  • Name: Judy Boozer
  • EMFC Club Treasurer

I am honored to serve on the board of such a fine soccer club as EMFC. Two years ago my youngest son, Ian, joined the Fusion team, which is now our extended family. I have served as the team's manager this past year and have enjoyed every moment.

Even though I grew up in Michigan, I have lived on the west coast for over 21 years. I earned my B.A. in Business Education from Idaho State University and my Masters in Business Education from Portland State University. Currently, I teach business classes at Lane Community College.

My husband, Marty, and I have four children. Deena and Nathan are grown and on their own. Troy is a sophomore at Churchill High School and Ian is a 7th grader at Kennedy Middle School. Soccer has been a big part of my life for over 23 years as three of my children have played this incredible sport.

I am a big advocate for the discipline that comes with playing athletics and firmly believe that this discipline can be transferred to the academic setting. Ian has played for several soccer organizations, and we are proud to call EMFC home.

It is my hope that I can assist with the continued growth of this soccer club as it provides such wonderful soccer services to the youth of our community.

  • Kurt Engle

  • EMFC Club Vice President

I am very pleased to serve as a founding board member for the Eugene Metro Fútbol Club. As a Board Member I will do my best to ensure that EMFC becomes an enduring institution of quality soccer in the Eugene/Springfield area.

In my younger years, I did not have the opportunity to be involved in the game of soccer. However, as my son, Sam ('93 Fusion) started playing soccer, I was drawn to the sport. I coached an AYSO co-ed team for two years but did not develop an appreciation or a technical understanding of the game until Sam became involved in Club Soccer. Since then, I have served as a parent-helper at team practices and have managed to get myself on a few City League Teams. I thoroughly enjoy the game of soccer and will use my enthusiasm to serve the EMFC Board.

My family has lived in the Eugene/Springfield area for 20+ years. I spent too many years at the U of O, but managed to come away with a B.S in Chemistry and Computer Science.

Besides the game of soccer, I enjoy numerous outdoor activites like fly-fishing, hiking, backpacking, snow shoeing and just about anything else that will get me away from work.

He returned to Eugene in 2000 and founded Creative Minds School, an alternative school for non-traditional students where he served as director up to the fall of 2007. He then decided to go another direction and founded Apropos International, an organization dedicated to international development, currently working on developing an eco-center in Peru and a farm/hostel in Ecuador.

Bear has played soccer all of his life and currently coaches for the club. Bear will bring his experience in developing high-quality educational programs as well as his knowledge of the game to the EMFC Board to help the club continue to provide the highest possible service to its members.

  • Name: Jason Giles
  • EMFC Club Board Member

I am very pleased to have the opportunity of serving our kids, parents and staff as a board member for EMFC. My wife Ann and I moved to Eugene with our two daughters - Rachel (95 Magic) and Gracie (Little Metro's) back in 2001.

As U of O alumni we were excited about returning to the community and have found it to be a great place to live, work and raise a family. As a 'small town' kid I was blessed with the opportunity to be a three sport athlete and have developed a great appreciation for the life lessons that are taught and learned through sports. Back then, I could not have imagined playing on a team as competitive, well coached, organized and supported as those in our club. I firmly believe that children who participate in sports are well rounded, happier & healthier and I am thankful that EMFC provides this program for such a broad spectrum of our youth.

I have worked for Rexius since 1993 and I am currently the Vice-President of Sustainability. My hobbies - when not on the sidelines watching my girls play soccer - include triathlons, cycling, and skiing.

I sincerely appreciate the opportunity to serve you.
